Pirate Theme Tent Decorating Contest & Recycling Thank you!

Hi Sugarbear Families,

We wanted to let you know that the theme for this Saturday's meet will be "Pirates".

The meet is happening on 7/11/09 at our very own Oakmont Pool. All family tents & team tents are encouraged to participate by decorating according to the pirate theme. The more tents that are decorated, the more team spirit we show! One winner will be chosen.

Along the same lines, be sure to dress the part by wearing your pirate gear... eye patches, jewels, vests, etc. We just ask that our maties leave their toy swords at home. On this Friday, 7/10/09, as part of Fun Fridays we will be passing out pirate tattoos. Be sure to get your tattoo at practice and wear it to the meet.

Thank you to all Sugarbears for using Recycling Bins at the pool. They are filling up thanks to you. We have heard that some kids are in charge of bringing their family's recyclables to the pool, so we are getting bagfuls...a great way to involve the kids in this community service/team fundraiser. It is perfectly fine to drop bags off & we''ll be sure to turn them in. Keep up the great work!!

Go Sugarbears!

Swim-a-thon!

Hey there Sugarbears:

The swim-a-thon is in one week on June 24th at morning practice. How many pledges do you have? The team goal is $8,500. If each swimmer collects 50.00 which is around 10 pledges we will make our goal. This is the major fundraiser for the team. If we make our team goal the team will have the opportunity to throw water balloons at the coaches at Pre-Champs Party Thurs, July 23rd. FUN! See the prize sheet for the fun prizes.

Why do we have a swim-a-thon? It is a great endurance exercise for the swimmers as it teaches your body to use oxygen more effectively and therefore swim faster. It is also our biggest fundraiser for this summer so we need everyone to participate and help support our team. It will be held on Wednesday, June 24th and envelopes should be turned in by Wednesday, July 1st.

What if swimmer cannot attend the Swim-A-Thon? Swimmers are still encouraged to participate by collecting pledges and winning prizes. Just collect flat donations instead of per lap donations. Remember we can only meet our team goal with all our swimmers participating and helping out.

What is a swim-a-thon? The swim-a-thon is a fundraiser where swimmers ask for sponsors to donate money to them. Each swimmer will swim continuous laps (as many as they can in the allotted time) and then collect the money from their sponsors. The swim-a-thon is held during normal swim practice times. Swim-a-thon donation sheets will be provided in the family folders. You can get more forms and information go to:
http://www.sugarbears.org/swimathon.htm

Who do I ask for pledges? Ask your friends, family members, neighbors, relatives, parent’s co-workers, and anyone else you might know to sponsor you.

What is the day of the Swim-A-Thon like? The swimmers will be swimming, with volunteers counting the laps. After there will be goodies to reward the swimmers.

What other parent help is needed? We will need lap counters, and people to bring and serve treats on the day of the event. We will have a sign up sheet for people to bring treats and count laps. For forms, envelopes, prizes go to http://www.sugarbears.org/swimathon.htm

Who can I contact if I need help or have more questions?
Please contact either Jenifer Cox 780-5433 nate_jenabc@yahoo.com or Megan Hoppes 773-9608 mlhoppes@comcast.net
Thank you!

Rocklin Meet Results Available. Attention Photographers!

Our meet results and corresponding reports from our Meet with Rocklin are now available on-line. We apologize for the delay. For the record, our Head ComputerOps, Mike Hynes, has provided the reports in a very timely matter for the past two weeks. It is our Stinky Cheeseman who has been on vacation and slow to posting. Now that the Cheeseman has returned, future posts should occur more quickly. Thank you for your patience.

Attention Photographers
We have seen many photo enthusiast snapping pictures at meets and special Sugarbear events and we would like you to consider contributing your pictures for review and possible selection into the end-of-year slide show. Here are the general guidelines and how-to in submitting your work.
Submit original photos-- let our experts crop, color correct, and sharpen!
CDs drop-point-- Drop CDs of your pictures in Paige Thomas' box and she will get them to our slide show leader. Put your name and phone number on the CD so we can acknowledge your work.
Be Surprised!-- Not every photo will be chosen, but you may enjoy seeing some of your work show up on the big-screen!
Don't Delay-- Each week, after shooting your favorite Sugarbears, go ahead and drop that CD off. It will allow our volunteers to sort through the hundreds of photos weekly, rather than all at once.
Thank You!-- Our volunteers do a great job, but they can't be everywhere. Your photos will help make the slide show memorable and fun!

A special note to families of Senior swimmers:
We include a special segment in the slide show showcasing our graduating seniors. Please provide between 8 to 12 pictures of your Senior ranging in age from birth to current age. It is usually a good idea to have a good spread. Something like new born, two years, 7 years, 10 years, 13 years, etc.. The Senior picture (if possible) should be your school Senior picture. But also include your last Sugarbear picture. Please put the photos in an envelope with your son or daughter’s name clearly marked on it give it to David. We will take good care of your photos and return them to you as soon as they are scanned into the computer.

Important: Seniors - If your pictures include multiple people in the shot.. Please, tell me which one is you by writing it on a sticky and placing it on the back of the picture.

Thank you for your help in making this season’s slide show a memorable one!
David Thomas

Sugarbear Team Social at Sky Zone!

This Monday, 6/15/09, is our team social. In past years, we have had several parties divided by age group, but this year we are simplifying. There will be one social at one location on 6/15/09 & it will be divided into two age groups.

The 10 & under swimmers will participate from 7-8pm. The 11 & up swimmers will participate from 8-9pm.

We will be meeting at SKY ZONE in Rocklin at 1091 Tinker Road, phone number: 644-9966.

There is swim practice on Monday. The social is in the evening and does not conflict with morning practice.

The Sugarbears are taking over SKY ZONE for our own private party. The team is paying for each swimmer to use the facilitywhich includes a 3-D Dodgeball court & a main court comprised of wall-to-wall trampolines. There will be food available for purchase. We also have two partyrooms for parents & non-jumpers to enjoy.

This is a great opportunity for families to socialize & for swimmers to have a great time. If you haven't already signed up at the pool deck, please email Kris Brown atbrown1642@yahoo.com as soon as possible if you plan to come.

We will try to accommodate siblings on a first come, first serve basis. Due to safety issues, we are limited to 100 participants per hour & priority is given to swimmers.

Come as early as 1/2 before your jump session (ie. 6:30 & 7:30pm) to check in.

BRING SOCKS & wear casual clothes. Any participant under the age of 18 must have a waiver form signed by a parent or legal guardian.

If you have anyquestions, contact Kris Brown or visit http://www.skyzonesports.com/

See you at SKY ZONE!!!

Birth Certificates and Stimulus Package

Thank you to everyone who attended our Parent Kickoff Meeting last night.

We had an excellent turnout and we appreciate everyone taking the time to attend!
Thank you!

FYI. For those who have yet to prove their swimmer's age with a birth certificate, the certificate(s) can be brought to the Roseville Sports Center (1545 Pleasant Grove Blvd) or faxed to 774-5999 to the attention of Kate Rebello.

Providing a copy of a Birth Certificate is required this year.
So, even if you are a returning Sugarbear, this is required and needs to be done before our first dual meet (June 13th).

Another friendly reminder that NorCal swim shop will be on our pooldeck today and Friday for fittings and ordering of this year's new swim suit. NorCal will be on the pool deck from 5-6:30pm.
Important to order your swim suit before the end of this Friday in order to receive your suit in time for our Time Trials/Picture Day.

As mentioned last night, we currently have around 180 swimmers, with the hope of having a few more teens join our team. To help entice 15-18s to swim for the Sugarbears the City of Roseville has come up with the following stimulus package. If they are interested in swimming, starting June 1, the fees would be $135 resident and $145 non-resident.

The Bustamante's have been an active and supportive Sugarbear family, but this past summer (and entire year) has been of extreme hardship.

The community is holding a benefit Car Wash to help support the Bustamante Family.

Your help and support would be greatly appreciated.

Our Year End Survey results for 2008 have been posted and now available on-line. Click here to access the evaluations.

Thank you for all of those that took the time to fill out the survey and providing us with your feedback.

It is also worthwhile this time of year to review our list of parent responsibilities for the Sugarbears, which describes the difference between Wishbones, Jawbones, Knucklebones and Backbones. Sugarbears have a long history and tradition of being a support organization with a high percentage of backbones.

Our Sugarbear website has been updated with the schedule of our board meetings, times and locations planned during the off-season. Please note that these meetings are open to all Sugarbear parents and we welcome your participation and impact. You can (and do) make a difference!

Attention! Youth Water Polo League in Roseville!

Want to stay in the water this Fall and try out the fun and exciting Olympic sport of water polo? The Fall Youth League is for boys and girls ages 5 to 14. No prior experience is necessary, though good swimming ability is a must. 5 to 7 year olds will play in the Noodle Ball group where they will be able to use a water noodle for bouyancy and support. 8-14 year olds will be grouped by age, ability and experience in practices and games.

There is a Free Introductory Clinic on Sunday, August 17 from 5:00 to 6:00pm at the Roseville Aquatics Center to get your feet wet and try things out.

The Fall Youth League will begin the week of August 25 with practices on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. There will be four "league" game dates through the end of the program on October 12.

Also a quick thank you to those that have completed our Sugarbear Survey. We have received amost 30 surveys so far. True Champion and Record Breaker

The following article has been submitted to Roseville Press Tribune for their consideration.

A true champion is one that faces adversity, overcomes and excels.

Local Swimmer, Justin Sutter, has been an exemplary champion and record breaker for his recreational swim team, the Roseville Sugarbears.

Swimming for the Sugarbears since age 6, he was part of the dynasty that was both dual and VFCAL league champions for 14 straight years. In 2005, with an expansion to the Granite Bay Gators swim team, in which the entire coaching staff, parent board and 80% of the swim families exiting, Justin was one of only 30 swimmers returning as a Sugarbear.

Justin recalls “It was hard when most of my teammates left for the Gators, especially since a lot of us had known each other for so long. An era had definitely ended.”

While not the most desirable situation, Justin demonstrated leadership and stuck it out with the recreational program that is based at the Oakmont Community Pool. He has been a key contributor to the resurgence of the Roseville Sugarbears Swim Team. The Sugarbears now boast well over 200 swimmers that have been greatly inspired by Justin and his long-time friend and team mate, Nick Bennett. The Roseville Sugarbears have moved up each year within their league standings and took 3rd place this past weekend at the VFCAL Championships.

At the VFCAL Championships Justin set both a new Sugarbear Team record and VFCAL Meet record by posting a 21.76 in the 50 Free. Justin’s seed times for the 50 Backstroke and 100 Free would have been lower than the current VFCAL records had he swam those individual events. Instead, Justin unselfishly swam for his team in both the Medley and Free Relay and not the individual events.

While this is Justin’s last year of eligibility for recreational swimming, Justin made the best of the opportunity by setting new team records for all of the individual events of his age group (15-18 Boys). To break and hold all the records of a swim team of strong aquatic stature that has existed for over 40 years is quite an accomplishment.

Sugarbear President Jeff Huber shares “Our team was blessed to have Justin Sutter and Nick Bennett return this year. While it was a thrill to watch their performances, the real joy is in our younger swimmers being surrounded by such positive and inspiring role models”.

Justin’s mother Tammy explains “Justin, being rather shy, was flattered by all the enthusiasm from the younger swimmers and the kind words from their parents. Things like this make for lifetime memories and who knows, maybe someday, far in the future, Justin will be able to bring his own kids to the pool and see if they too, are Sugarbear material!”

The Sutter family motto being “"Once a Sugarbear, always a Sugarbear".

Tammy also adds “Many happy memories were made being a Sugarbear, both for Justin and ourselves. As his mom and team mom every year he swam, it was so fun to watch the boys grow each year, to go from throwing Lego's at each other as 6-and-unders, to flirting with and texting girls as 15-18's, and especially the camaraderie of being teammates.”

Justin is a 2007 graduate of Oakmont High School and placed top 10 in the 50 Free in section finals his senior year for the Oakmont High School Swim Team.

Justin Sutter swam this past year for Sierra College as a freshman and anchored their team’s 200 freestyle relay with a 21.0 split at the Big 8 Conference to help break the Wolverine’s school record (final record time of 1:25.87) and place 3rd in the Big 8.

Justin is using his swim skills as a lifeguard at Sunsplash this summer and is working on his Master Certification in Automotive Tech at Sierra College.

MaryTess Taylor signs full-ride athletic scholarship with CSUF

Our Sugarbear Coach MaryTess Taylor recently signed a letter of intent to swim for California State University of Fresno on a full ride athletic scholarship.

MaryTess, who took 3rd place this year in the 100 Breast Stroke in California State Finals for Sierra College, had received offers from Northridge, Concordia, Whittier and Chapman prior to signing with Fresno.

Fresno state is re-instating their Division I Women's Swimming and Diving team and is being headed up by Jeanne Fleck from Ohio State.
Here is an article on Jeanne's background and recent appointment and a recent interview.

"I am really excited. Besides being Division I and offering all of the academic programs of my interest, I am looking forward to seeing what I can accomplish by just focusing on swimming and not playing polo for the next couple years." said MaryTess. "Fresno is also very much a sports town, which should be a lot of fun."

MaryTess was a Roseville Sugarbear recreational swimmer since age 5 and retired last year from the Sugarbear program at age 18 and was awarded the Diane Dawson Memorial Award by the Sugarbears. She has been a Sugarbear coach for the last two years.

MaryTess has also swam and played polo for Oakmont High School and Sierra College.

While swimming recreational for the Sugarbears greatly instilled her great love and passion for swimming, it is the aquatics program at Sierra College which MaryTess credits as developing her to the next level as a collegiate swimmer, reaching Community College All-American status (top 16 within the nation) her freshman year at Sierra. The aquatics program at Sierra College, led by Coaches Scott Decker and Chris Breitbart, is phenomenal. The Sierra College women’s team has finished within the Top 2 in State for the past 4 years in a row.

While attending Fresno State, MaryTess plans to get a teaching credential and will be studying Art and French. Marytess is fluent in French.

Marytess lived in France for three years from age 12-14 and was submerged into the French culture and language by initially attending a Catholic French school in Cannes. She later transferred to an International School in Mougins where she continued her French and also studied Spanish. She hopes to go back to live in France at least 6 months to a year after Fresno.

Our Head Stroke and Turn, Mickey Langley, Introduced

Introducing Mickey Langley our Head Stroke and Turn Judge for the Roseville Sugarbears!

Mickey and her family joined the Sugarbears in 2000. Mickey has been a very dedicated Sugarbear parent.

She greatly assisted through our year of transition in 2005 and served as our Treasurer for three terms in addition to being our Head Stroke and Turn. During the summer of 2006, Mickey battled cancer and also suffered a broken arm. However, neither stopped her from being on our pool deck, leading the way. What dedication! Since there wasn't a retiring swimmer eligible for our Diane Dawson Memorial Award in 2006, Mickey was the recipient of the prestigious award, typically reserved for swimmers, for her dedication and inspiration to the team.

Mickey is joined on the pooldeck with her husband Jon and their two Sugarbears; Moriah (14) and Micah (11). Moriah and Micah both joined the Sugarbears as 6&Unders.

Sugarbears need at least 4 qualified judges at each meet. Two for the first shift and two for the second. There are four judges on the deck during the meet. Two from each team.

For obvious reasons, judges are guaranteed one of the best views of the pool. Judging is one of the volunteer tasks that require training by attending a clinic. This year's Stroke and Turn clinic is scheduled for Tuesday, May 20th at 6pm in Auburn. The clinic typically takes less than 2 hours and the cost is free.

If you are interested in learning how to Stroke and Turn Judge this summer, please contact Mickey. Her contact info can be found in our on-line roster. She would love to hear from you and would be willing to assist and have you shadow as you come up to speed.

Swim Buddy Nite Rescheduled for May 22nd

Our Swim Buddy Nite has been rescheduled for Thursday, May 22nd.

This was requested by our Sugarbear coaches, in order to give some lingering teens the chance to complete their registration. Sugarbears currrently have over 200 swimmers registered, but we expect to reach a team size around 215.
If Sugarbears have yet to checkout and try out our on-line system, note that the swimmers can add themselves and log their workouts, which will keep track of their number of practices, yardage, daily emotions, workouts and notes.

Stew them in Love!

Our first practice of the 2008 season is just a week away!
Note that the first three days of practice have been slightly modified.

Modified practice times, April 28-30th ONLY

6& Under/7-8
4:30-5:00 PM

9-12
5:00-6:00 PM

13-18
3:30-4:30 PM

As parents, we all want our children to grow up to be happy and healthy.

While there are no guarantees, swimming for a recreational swim team is an excellent opportunity and experience to help set a good foundation in a child’s life.

As our 2008 season approaches, it is good to reflect and understand the many benefits for participating on a recreational swim team.

- Promotes physical health and fitness
- Connects children with others (both within their family and a team)
- Creates lifetime memories
- Establishes good work habits and ethics
- Teaches how to set and achieve personal goals
- Enables personal growth and development

Some real dividends often occur when a Sugarbear reaches their teen years by continuing to keep them busy, active, connected and full of purpose.

For those families that may have a swimmer who has decided not to return this year, don’t be discouraged. Often times a child needs to take a break for awhile to better understand and appreciate the experience of being a Sugarbear. Or, perhaps the child has found another sport or activity that they want to focus on. Be assured, the time spent being a Sugarbear and a swim family has not been lost. Once a Sugarbear, you are always a Sugarbear!

If you have yet to do it already today, please give your Sugarbear a hug and tell them how much you love them.

We wish you and your family a very enjoyable and joyful summer.

Don't be just American IDLE this Spring

Get up off the couch and Spring into action by joining a Spring Swim Clinic or a Lesson being offered by the City of Roseville!

The City of Roseville Spring Aquatics 2008 Guide can be found on-line.
http://www.roseville.ca.us/parks/programs_n_classes/current_activity_guides.asp

Browse through the guide and select the course number(s) of interest.

The City provides 5 different ways to register, including an on-line WebReg option.

In particular, checkout the Spring Swim Clinics being offered to experienced swimmers to focus on proper stroke technique, race strategy and conditioning.

Already active this spring (beyond video games), or giving additional attention and focus to your school studies?

Excellent!

Consider joining the one week long Competitive Spring Swim Lessons to get you back in the water earlier in prep for this summer without any big commitment on your time.

Do you have a neighbor or younger sibling trying out for the team this year?
Highly recommend the Pre-Competitive Swim Lessons to help them get prepared for tryouts. While younger children are often “swimming like a fish” at the end of Summer, a short week long Spring swim lesson is just the ticket to get them eased back into the water and remove any potential tryout jitters.

The Spring Swim Clinics and Lessons described can be found on page 10 of the Spring Aquatics 2008 Guide and includes the offered age groups, times and locations. Slots are still available for both the Clinics and Lessons.

Coming Soon to the Sugarbear Pool Deck Near You!

Get ready for some additional action and family fun on our pool deck this summer! Our Sugarbear board has approved the purchase of a Weather-proof Outdoor Ping Pong Table!

In addition, Coach Jordan attended our recent board meeting and brought to our attention an available and affordable device to video record underwater. With the device, any video camera with a standard A/V jack can be used.

The device was demonstrated at the Coaches clinic Coach Jordan and Allison attended in Napa. The device, which comes with a pole attachment kit, has also been used up at Sierra College with very favorable results and feedback. Underwater visual viewing of a swimmer's stroke has been proven to be very helpful and valuable. Click here for the vendor's website for the underwater camera device.

So, get ready for a very fun and productive summer. Sugarbears not only ROCK, they have the technological edge!

Some Additional Quick Note and Updates:

Update on Sugarbear Coaching

The RSB Board wanted to give a quick update concerning our coaches for 2008.

Jordan Haley, Allison Pieracci and Marytess Taylor are returning this summer as Sugarbear coaches. Jordan and Allison will be co-head coaches this summer, with each assigned lead responsibility for three of the age groups.

Jordan Haley and Allison Pieracci recently attended a two day coaches clinic in Napa on January 5th-6th. Our Sugarbear Parents Club covered the cost for them to attend the clinic.

In addition, there is an upcoming Northern California Recreational Swim Coaches Clinic scheduled locally for mid-March, which our Sugarbear coaches plan to attend. This clinic is being presented by the City of Roseville and Sanders Consulting Group.

The Goals and Objectives of the Clinic are the following:

  • To give coaches the tools to prepare for a successful season.
  • Provide insight on how to effectively communicate with parent boards and city representatives.
  • Provide knowledge of effective practice drills and stroke instruction.
  • Create a place where coaches from Northern California can come together to network and share information.

Keynote Speaker will be Roque Santos "Looking towards the future: The Importance of Recreational Swim Coaches."
Jeff Jungk of Glen Oaks Sealions, "Case Study of a Successful Team".
Brian Botsford of Cordova High School, "Drills and Stroke Instruction"
Dee Duenas of Elk Grove Piranhas, "Making Practice Competitive and FUN".
Kim Berrios of Rollingwood, Topic TBD.

Click here if you would like to view the entire brochure and more details on the clinic.

Jameson Ferris and Stacey Olveda will not be returning this summer as Sugarbear coaches.
We wish them the best!

The City of Roseville currently have the available assistant coaching positions posted on their website.http://www.roseville.ca.us/jobs
If you know of potential candidates, please make them aware of the opportunity.

Our RSB Board plans to have representation during the interview process. Swim parents Steve Lawrence and Mickey Langley are currently who we have recommended for participating. If you are a swim parent with a strong swimming and/or coaching background and interested in being considered for participation, please contact a board member.

Megan Henry plans to have weekly meetings with the Sugarbear coaches this summer and is open to having parent representation at the meetings.

Registration packets for returning Sugarbears are expected to be mailed out by the end of this month. Returning Sugarbears have priority if their registration is received before the priority registration cutoff, which is typically around mid-March. The registration packet will provide the exact date.

For new swimmers wanting to join the Sugarbear team this year, the City of Roseville Tryout Information packet for 2008 is now accessible on our sugarbear website as well as on the City of Roseville Aquatics page.

GO SUGARBEARS!!!

RSB Meeting Update

Last week, as previously announced, we held our first Sugarbear board meeting to recap last summer, review our survey results and begin our initial discussion and planning for next season. Also began our planning for our first annual off-season Dinner/Auction fundraiser. Sugarbear parents from the following families were present:

  • Huber
  • Langley
  • Morel
  • Thomason
  • Ostrander
  • Johnson
  • Busby
  • Shafto
  • Taylor
Outgoing president from the Seawolves, Jennifer Pointer, joined the meeting for the dinner/auction discussion.

Our League Representative Megan Henry also attended and provided several updates. A key one to note is that the VFCAL Meeting is scheduled for October 24th. Megan, Head Coach Jordan and three Sugarbear Board Members will be attending. Responses from our recent survey responses are used as input.

Not to overwhelm anyone, but it was suggested from the surveys that the Sugarbears board provide more visibility and understanding to what all goes into the planning and execution for a swim season. Please click here to view our current 2008 season todo list. We have tried to keep it simple and have those not as involved in the team to focus on their two key responsibilities:

  • Volunteer Meet Support (14 hours minimum)
  • Signout at least 7 days in advance (minimize scratches)

But, if you see anything on the list that you would like to take the lead on or assist, please let us know.

Also, if you are willing to serve on the Board or a committee, we would LOVE to hear from you. Feel free to contact Jef Huber or Michael Taylor.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 10th and will be held at Lakeview Hills Club House. Focus of the meeting will primarily be on the planning for the Dinner/Auction. Meeting will begin at 7pm, feel free to arrive as early as 6pm to first socialize and enjoy the surroundings. Directions to the clubhouse can be found on the Lakeview Hills website: http://www.lakeviewhills.org/

A THANK YOU to the Hubers for hosting our last meeting.

Switching gears, for anyone interested in seeing Coach Jordan and/or Marytess play waterpolo. Sierra College has a match against their main rival, American College, this Wednesday, September 26th at the Orangevale Community Pool. Mens match begins at 3:30pm, followed by the ladies team.

Hope to see you there!

Back to School!

Hello Sugarbears!

Hope everyone is getting back to school and enjoying themselves; seeing all of their classmates once again, increasing their knowledge and learning lots of new skills.

While parents go over Back to School Forms, please take the 5-10 minutes to enroll for eScrip.

It is a very good program to bring extra and easy dollars into our local schools. You can designate up to three groups who can benefit from your registration. Please consider the Sugarbears, with our GroupID 500004186 as being one of your designated groups. Additional information on eScrip can be found on our Sugarbear website, under our "Ways and Means" section. If you have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to ask our board members. In particular, Jef Huber and Michael Taylor are both knowledgeable and supporters of the eScrip program.

A quick reminder that this Friday, August 31st, is the deadline for filling out a Sugarbear survey and becoming eligible for the drawing. Your feedback and suggestions from this past summer is highly valued. Please take the 5 minutes to complete our on-line survey before Friday so it will be included in our summarized reports.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable and safe Labor Day Weekend!

OHS Water Polo Alumni Game

Oakmont High School will be holding their 2nd Annual Water Polo Alumni Game a week from this Saturday, August 18th, from 10:30am to noon at Oakmont Community Pool. Admission is FREE.
Great opportunity for Sugarbears and parents to come out and catch the action and be introduced to the exciting sport of water polo. Great fun. Be sure and sport some of your Sugarbear wear. A Sugarbear T-shirt should draw the attention of some of the players that are current and former Sugarbears.
For example, we hope to see Josh Collison, Jonathan Wieneke, Nick Bennett, Ryan Cole, Kyle Cole, Ryan Cornilsen, Casey Cornilsen and Taylor Rusk to name a few. Note that Oakmont Water Polo Coach, Mark Plank, is a Sugarbear swim parent and also expected to be in action.

2007 VFCAL Champs Meet is in the books!!

Excellent job today!
We are so proud of ALL our Sugarbears.

Click here to view a report of Sugarbears that went especially big today, by posting an improvement against their seed time!

In addition, click here to view Sugarbear performances that placed in the Top Ten which, to my understanding, should qualify them to this year's Meet of Champions (MoC). The MoC is an optional meet that will be held in Woodland on August 4th and 5th. Please check and talk with your coaches to verify your qualification and participation in the MoC.

The additional reports, such as improvements, top times and high points (both for Champs and Overall Season) have been posted on our website. The previously posted Champs meet results have also been updated to show DQs.

We look forward to seeing everyone at our Awards Night tomorrow! David Thomas has finished our slide show and it eagerly awaits. For those new to the team, David has some mad skills at creating a slide show, so you will not want to miss it.

GO SUGARBEARS!!!!

Our Swim-A-Thon awards will be presented from 7-8:30pm, along with the long awaited events of the Captain and Stinky getting their heads shaved and Jameson being transformed into a girl in celebration of our team reaching the goal of raising over $10,000! The Final Week

Some quick notes and reminders as we enter our final week before Champs!

Results and additional reports from our meet with Orangevale are now posted on our website. Be sure and fill out your Beary Best forms this final week to claim any prizes. Julie Lawrence is typically at the pool on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

Coaches have called an additional practice for tomorrow (Monday, July 16th).
Standard practice times apply.

Pre-Champs party is this Friday, July 20th at Maidu beginning at 6pm.

On our website, we have posted a spreadsheet for the volunteer shifts needing to be filled for Champs. Please note that we have extracted out what is just required of the Sugarbears for Champs and that there are many other jobs, roles and shifts being filled by other teams. Your help in filling our assigned volunteer positions is greatly appreciated. Many hands make little work.

Michele Shafto is the current, main contact for the spreadsheet, but she may elect to have certain heads assist with recruiting certain areas (ie., Head Timer for Timers).

We will also have a copy of the spreadsheet printed and available at the pool deck near the family folders.

The support this year by our Sugarbear parent volunteers has been superb, so let's finish this season off on the high note that it deserves and show the entire league just how well this team really has it together.

SUGARBEARS ROCK!!

Sugarbears prepare to go Wikki-Wikki...

Aloha Sugarbears! A reminder that our final home meet is this Saturday with the Orangevale Tigersharks and our Meet Theme is Island!
So, get out those grass skirts, coconuts and perhaps share some colorful leis with your swim buddies!
The progress this year has been remarkable. A large number of you have reached your Personal and/or MoC Goal Times, or just on the verge. Be sure and update your times and achievements in our on-line Buddies & Goals Database, before we head into this final dual meet. We will have our Board of Champions at this meet. So in addition to ringing the bell, we will be updating the board, getting it ready for display at our Pre-Champs Party!
Also a reminder that tomorrow night (Thursday from 5-8pm) is our 8&Under age group social at Hillsborough Park. If you have yet to RSVP, please contact Karen Salatti or Megan Hoppes asap.
Mahalo,

Happy 4th of July! I Love America!

Our Theme for this Saturday's Meet with the Woodcreek Seawolves is "I Love America!". So, be sure and keep the patriotic spirit going and wear your "Stars & Stripes" and "Red, White & Blue" Bear Wear proudly!

A thank you to swim parent Paul Shafto for creating our Board of Champions. If you have yet to see it, be sure and check it out. Paul did an outstanding job. Thank you Paul! The board was designed to not only post Sugarbears who have reached their Meet of Champion (MoC) goal times, but also for Sugarbears to post whenever they achieve a new Personal Best or achieve a Personal Goal above or on their way towards the MoC Goal Times.

MoC Goal Times are the 10th place finish times from last year's VFCAL Champs and are an excellent marker for swimmers to strive and track their progress against. Visually watch the board as we continue to grow and improve as a Sugarbear swim team!

Parents can help by writing their swimmer's name and particular achievements (times) on the supplied metal label rings for the Board of Champions.

A reminder that our Swim-A-Thon pledges are due this Friday, July 6th. Thank you for everyone that participated in our Swim-A-Thon. Excellent! The number of laps completed by each swimmer is accessible on our Sugarbear website.

We are soooo close to our Swim-A-Thon goal. As of 7-3-07 we have raised $7,671.75 towards our $10,000 goal. Here is how you can help get us the rest of the way there:

1. If you haven’t turned in your envelope yet, get it in before Friday so we can get your t-shirts ordered.

2. If you can’t collect all your pledges before Friday, turn in what you have and then turn in the rest as you get them (you can let us know if you have more coming by writing a note on your envelope).

3. Mark a t-shirt size on the envelope if you collected $50 or 10 pledges.

Remember our goal is for EACH swimmer to get about $50 in pledges and every dollar counts. Please turn in envelopes and pledges even if you don’t have the full amount (no amount is too small). We need everyone’s help to get to our goal. We are almost there—lets get those heads shaved (and we really want to see Jameson in a dress).

If you have questions concerning the Swim-A-Thon, feel free to contact Jenifer Cox 780-5433 nate-jenabc@yahoo.com or Megan Hoppes 773-9608 mhoppes@infostations.com

Thank you for your support. Have a Happy and Safe 4th of July!

My Oh My, What a Beautiful Day!

Justin Sutter has set a new Roseville Sugarbear Team record in the Boys 15-18 50 Breast event this year.

Justin actually broke the record in Granite Bay posting a 28.72. Yesterday, Justin once again surpassed the previous Team Record (29.15) held by Brad Dawson by posting a 28.92.
Congratulations Justin!

Our Meet Results with Auburn are now accessible on our website. Was that a cool meet or what? Very fun, competitive and close throughout the day. Be sure and checkout scoring by the different age groups. The future is ours! The additional Top Time and Improvement reports to follow.

A reminder that our 9-12 Broom Ball Social is tomorrow (Monday) at Skate Town located on 1009 Orlando Ave (783-8550). Sugarbears are asked to arrive as early as 3:30 to get setup and instructed for this exciting and fun activity on the ice (~4:00-5:30pm). We apologize for the early start, but we were limited in our options in securing time on the ice. If you have not RSVP'd for this social and still want to attend, please contact Karen Salatti or Megan Hoppes asap, so they can ensure we have enough pizza and soda (5:30-7pm). Joining the social at 5:30pm is an option, but please RSVP! Their contact information can be found in our on-line roster.

Next weekend (June 30th) is a BYE. The Theme being relaxation. We hope all our families have a safe, relaxing and enjoyable Fourth of July Holiday.

Well deserved.

Zip-A-Dee-Do-Da

A reminder that our home meet theme for this Saturday with the Auburn Robalos is the Wonderful World of Disney!

Here is your chance, especially parents, to really be Goofy and Mickey Mouse around. Don't forget your swim buddies. How about a right mouse click and printing out their Personal Best Times from our on-line Goals Database and making a "Good Luck" card out of it? What? They don't have their times entered? For shame. Use the Top Times report and enter the times in for them! Thanks Buddy!!

Hey, great turnout at the Swim-A-Thon today! Not sure on the running tally from pledges, but very impressed with the number of laps all of our swimmers were able to swim! Awesome!!

A final reminder that tomorrow is Age Group Picture Day!
Be sure and show up in time so you are included in the picture with your fellow swim mates.
Age group pictures of Sugarbears have proven to be a priceless keepsake for many swimmers. Even if you don't plan to purchase one yourself, do your friends a favor and bless them with your presence.

Here is the schedule one more time:

8:00am -- 9/10, 11/12
8:30am -- 13-18
9:00am -- 6U, 7/8

Individual Makeup pictures are also being offered tomorrow by Spectrum photography.

Just keep Swimming!

Whatsup w/ that?

Hey Scratch Swimmers,

What's up with these last minute, no shows to your team's swim meets?

Here's the deal:

It's unfair to our swimmers if coaches have put you in a relay event and there are 3 other swimmers on that team expecting you to show up.

It's unfair to our swimmers who may have had a chance to swim in the event you were assigned to swim in but you decided not to come to the meet.

It's disrespectful to our coaches who count on you to participate, be a part of a team, and try your very best. Kinda hard to do when you don't show up.

It's a waste of time at the beginning of each meet where coaches and parent volunteers are juggling the events and assigned swimmers around at the last minute; trying to minimize potential impact to relays and other swimmers by making sure events are covered with the goal of our entire team doing its best.

It's been made clear that a) we all get it about summer vacations and plans, b) it's okay to miss a meet, c) exceptions to last minute no show can be an illness.

Please be respectful to our team and sign out a week ahead of time so that coaches can plan our team's meet(s). When you decide at the last minute to not come to a meet, it's not all about you anymore.

Our team has a lot of fun and a lot of potential. Please be a part of this exciting swim season and demonstrate your commitments and follow through on sign outs.

SUGARBEAR SWIMMERS SCHOLARSHIPS

Hello Sugarbear Swimmers and Families,

Each year The Sugarbears Swim Team provides scholarship awards. These awards are intended to recognize those retiring swimmers who have demonstrated an ability to grow to their full potential within the Sugarbear Family of Swimmers. These eligible recipients are winners in the true sense beyond just finishing first in a race; they are winners in their personal attitudes. Through a long-term doing their best attitude; willingness to set and strive towards personal goals, and giving back their experiences to the team, these swimmers represent the best of what it means to be a Roseville Sugarbear.

At the beginning of each swim season, eligible swimmers will be identified and notified of their eligibility. It is up to these swimmers to review and complete the application form including understanding, and completion of, the criteria requirements.

Eligible swimmers for the 2007 season include

Mary Tess Taylor, Justin Sutter, Nick Bennett.

These swimmers should check their family folder by the end of week (6/6) for a copy of the application. Completed application and required service hours must be completed by July 17th.

Completed applications will then be reviewed by Parent Board and Coaching staff. Scholarships will be awarded during our End-of-Season-Celebration ceremony Sunday July 22nd.

All families are encouraged to review the scholarship overview, criteria that is posted in the 'online forms' section under 'general information' in left hand navigation section @ sugarbear site.

2007 Time Trials is in the books!

Today's results from Time Trials are now available on our website.
Great job by everyone!!! Excellent effort and attitude by all our Sugarbears. We also got through our pics efficiently, the BBQ/snackbar was delicious and the "Ready Bench" worked really well. Thank you everyone!!!
Coaches may arrange Time Trial MAKEUPs this Monday during swim practice time. Please talk with your coach.
A quick reminder that there is no practice on Friday, June 8th, due to the graduation ceremony occurring at Oakmont.
Also, NorCal will make an effort to deliver remaining swim suits to our practice on Thursday, June 7th. Otherwise, the suits can be picked up at NorCal on Friday at their store. Any remaining suits will be brought to Placerville on Saturday.
Now that swimmers have their base times from Time Trials for this year, we strongly encourage parents to sit with their swimmers and enter or update their Personal Best times in our "Buddies & Goals" database. Review the Meet of Champion (MoC) Goal Times for their age and set some reasonable goals. Note that MoC Goal Times are the 10th place finish times from last year's (2006) VFCAL Champs. MoC Goal Times are goals for hopefully finishing within the top 10 at this year's (2007) Champs and earning a trip to the Meet of Champions.
Swimmer's base times are also used for our Beary Best program. Note two Personal Bests and earn a prize from our fantastic Beary Best program. Forms for Beary Best can be found in our "On-line Forms" area under "General Info".
If you would like a more thorough explanation on the Beary Best Program, the Podcast with Julie Lawrence is highly recommended.

REMINDER: Swimmer, Team Pictures before Time Trials

Reminder: Swim Pictures will be taken Saturday June 2nd before Time Trials .

Pictures will include each swimmer's picture taken and once we finish these, we will take a Sugarbears Team picture.

Taking these pictures before Time Trials allows us to hopefully get the most individual swimmers picture taken as well as the most swimmers for our overall team picture. It's a process that requires lots of coordination and cooperation in order to get these done within an hour!

Spectrum Photography is our team photographer and they do a great job in the quality of pictures at a reasonable prices. (details have been put in family folder in terms of what is available and pricing)

In order to get all of this done before we start TT, it is imperative that:

* Photos start @ 7:30 am sharp
* Get there earlier; first come first serve and there will we a line (there will be 2-3 photographers snapping pictures)
* Have cash or check; no credit cards can be accepted.
* Line for pictures will be outside the fence behind Oakmont Pool's bleachers.
* No swimmers or parents will be allowed inside the pool; ensures nice background pool image and not a bunch of folks walking past.
* After picture has been taken, swimmers need to stay out of immediate pool area again to minimize potential of folks being in pictures background.
* Once all individual pictures have been taken, all swimmers picture will be taken for team picture. Swimmers, please make sure that you are in the area behind the bleachers so that we can get everyone quickly lined up.
* Make up picture dates and data for individual age/gender team photos date/time -- TBD

Any questions? Contact Carmen Morel @ 662-4300 or leave note in Morel Family folder

Swim-A-Thon Date Change

Attention Sugarbears:

After reviewing the schedule we have determined that it would be more beneficial to have the swim-a-thon earlier in the season so we have changed the date. The new date will be on Wednesday June 20th. That means it is only one month away. It is time to start collecting pledges so that we can make this our biggest and best swim-a-thon ever. Look for information this week in your family folders and if you have any questions please contact Jenifer Cox or Megan Hoppes. Their contact info can be found in our on-line roster. Thank you for your support!

No evening Make Up practices this summer

Due to budget constraints, the City of Roseville will not be providing evening Make Up practice sessions this summer.

The City of Roseville made the decision prior to the start of the season, but it was an update that our Parent's Club did not previously catch and communicate out. Sorry.

We apologize for this limitation, inconvenience and late notice.

Our Sugarbear website had incorrect information posted within our "Workout Schedule" page showing Make Up practices beginning after June 11th. The page has now been corrected.

The City of Roseville will re-evaluate their decision after this season.

Swim Buddies - Our Space

The swim buddy assignments and forms completed last night have been entered into our on-line swimmer's database.

Please login and check your assignments and learn more about your buddies. The swimmer's database is accessible from the Sugarbears website's left side menu.
The link is entitled "Buddies & Goals" under the Swimmers section.

Note that this year the coaches have assigned teams of swim buddies, where each team is combining older, mid-age and younger swimmers together.

The swimmer's database allows swimmers to share their preferences, personal goals, goal times and achievements.

Goal sheets will be distributed soon to the swimmers on the pool deck. Or, feel free to enter your goals directly on-line.

For those who may have missed it, this year's coaches rap intro from last night has been posted into our bulletin board under "Fun".

Our Head Timer, Patrick Bussey, Introduced

Just want to take the opportunity to introduce Patrick Bussey, our Head Timer for the Roseville Sugarbears, to our new swim families.

Patrick and his family joined the Sugarbears in 2005. During Tryouts in 2005 Patrick immediately approached and asked "Now how does this work? What can I do to help?".

Patrick is a teacher and the wrestling coach for Oakmont High School. Patrick and his wife Carey have three of their four children on the Sugarbears. Camryn (5), Caitlin (9) and Luke (11). Their fourth child, Levi, just turned one so he is first learning to walk before joining the team. ;-)

To run an effective meet, we typically have a crew of 16 timers work in two 3 hour shifts. That is almost 100 hours of parent volunteer effort required for a single meet in just timing alone!

But no worries. Timing is popular since it is a great way for a swim parent to be close to the action, secure some shade, meet other parents and get their feet wet. No previous experience is necessary and it physically only requires for you to have a single working digit on at least one of your hands.

If you are interested in timing this summer, Patrick is the guy to checkin with. You can also assign yourself directly to a shift (timing or any other task) within our on-line volunteer database. If you don't know the password yet, just ask a coach or fellow swim parent on the pool deck. We appreciate your support!

New Style of Swim Suits for 2007!

The swim suit style for the Roseville Sugarbears is changing this year.

So, both returning Sugarbears and new swimmers will need to buy a swim suit this year.

In order for swimmers to have their swim suit before time trials and our team picture day, it is important that they order their new suit before 7pm May 9th.

Our website provides more detailed information on the style, sizes and prices.

Sugarbears Swimming Tips

Last year we brought back the brass bell to be rung whenever a Sugarbear swimmer posts a new personal best. We had a whole lot of "bell ringing" going on last summer!

To help assist for this coming summer, we have posted some Swimming Tips on our website. Give it a look and feel free to submit any tricks or tips you may want to share with your fellow Sugarbear team mates! The new page providing the Swimming Tips is accessible on our website, under the left side menu "Swimmers" area entitled "Swimming Tips".

Also note that the Swimmer's Goals Database for 2007 is now on-line. The database has been updated with this summer's Meet Of Champions (MoC) goal times.

MoC goal times come from our VFCAL championship Meet and are the 10th place finish times from each age group. Placing 10th or better at VFCAL earns points for the team and qualifies you for the Meet Of Champions!

Add yourself to our Swimmer's database and you will instantly see your corresponding MoC goal times for your events and age. Set your personal goals for this summer and check if the MoC goal times are reasonable.
If you don't know the password to our swim buddy and goal's area, email the webmaster.

It won't be long until we are back in the pool and ringing that bell. Some of you are already enjoying the Spring Clinics. Excellent!

The bell awaits...

Lottery for Fireworks Booth Permit

The Roseville Fire Department held a lottery this morning for the eleven available fireworks booth permits. The Roseville Aquatics Booster Club (RATBC) was not selected. There were 54 organizations entered into the lottery, so our chance of winning was about 20%.

The permits are good for five years and there are only fifteen made available, so it appears we will be out of the fireworks business for awhile. The Roseville Sugarbears were fortunate to be selected twice (back-to-back) before. We have had a fireworks booth for the past ten years. Next year, two more permits will become available, but with about forty organizations expected to apply, our chances of being selected next year decrease to 5%.

But, as Sugarbears have come to learn, as one door closes another door opens.
We can now focus our fundraising efforts in a new direction and perhaps establish a new tradition which will ultimately provide us with even more fun and control while we bring in the green stuff.

For now, our key fundraisers we have established are the following:
  • Sponsors
  • Swimathon
  • eScrip
If you have yet to register with eScrip, please take the 5 minutes and register!
Also consider asking your employer and local businesses to be a Sponsor of the Roseville Sugarbears.

Details and instructions for eScrip and Sponsors are available on our website under "Ways and Means"

Thank you for your support!

Podcast #21: Nick Mater Interview

Roseville Invitational Swim Meet

Also, while I have your attention, please mark your calendars.
The Roseville Invitational Meet for High Schools is scheduled for March 23rd and 24th and will be held at the Roseville Aquatics Complex (RAC).

There are 15 High School teams entered and the meet promises to be fast and fun to watch.

Sugarbear parent volunteering at the Roseville Invitational can earn our team $ from the City of Roseville, which can be applied towards equipment or facility rental for our program. The value earned is $10.00/hr. So, basically if we have 10 volunteers per day for 5 hours each, that would be $1000.00 for our team for the weekend! So, if you were one of those that enjoyed our pre-champs party or awards night at Maidu last year, here is your chance to help our team pay and secure similar facility use this summer.

If you are able to assist with the Roseville Invitational it would be greatly appreciated.
Please contact Scott Marchetti or Megan Henry at 774-5990.

Super Huber; 2007 Sugarbear Officers Announced!

If you look up "Super Ball" in Wikipedia, you will find the following description...

Super Ball is an extremely elastic ball made of Zectron, which contains the synthetic rubber polymer polybutadiene vulcanized with sulfur at a temperature of 165 degrees Celsius and at a pressure of 80 atmospheres. The Super Ball has an amazingly high coefficient of restitution. Dropped from shoulder level, Super Ball snapped nearly all the way back; thrown down, it could leap over a three-story building.

Well, the Roseville Sugarbears are releasing in 2007 their own amazing and fun Sugarbear President, The Super Huber!

The following is our list of 2007 Sugarbear Officers and Board Members.

  • Carmen Morel - Outgoing President
  • Jef Huber - President
  • Michele Shafto - Vice President
  • Amanda Huber - VP Ways and Means
  • Mickey Langley - Treasurer
  • Cheryl Wall - Secretary
  • Karen Salatti - Co-Social
  • Megan Hoppes - Co-Social
  • Susan Brandt - Boutique
  • Michael Taylor - Communications

Please join in congratulating Jef Huber and the rest of the 2007 officers in their ability to bounce into position and make an impact for another fantastic year!

Last year's officers, Pete Hradecky and Lisa Callaghan, both have swimmers that have decided to swim year round. We wish to thank them for their service and certainly wish them the best!

While Mickey Langley has agreed to serve a third term as Treasurer, the parent board would like to bring a new member on board to assume the role, or at least shadow Mickey for this term. Last year's numbers and the 2007 budget are already completed. So, if you are interested and can balance a checkbook, please contact a board member.

Sugarbears receive donated laptop

Agilent Technologies has donated an HP Omnibook 6000 laptop computer to the Roseville Sugarbears for their computer operations. The additional laptop will be very helpful, since it will allow a separate computer operator to make meet changes resulting from scratch sessions independently from the computer operator running the meet. The HP Omnibook has an Intel Pentium III (800 Mhz) processor, 256MB RAM, 14 inch screen and power adapter. The hardware specs are above the minimum requirements needed by our Meet Manager software. Thank you Agilent!

Board members to meet with City of Roseville

Roseville Sugarbear and Woodcreek Seawolve board members will be meeting with the City of Roseville this coming Tuesday, October 24th. Click here to see the agenda. Suggestions and feedback from our Sugarbear families from our year end surveys are used as input. Two strong, main themes we noticed as being voiced from our swim families, but not limited to, was the desire and ideas to improve champs and support for some type of mandatory hours of service. If you did not fill out a survey, or have any other recently raised issues or concerns (ie., after reviewing the recent VFCAL meeting notes), please contact one of our board members. We would be happy to hear from you and try to assist.

We will be walking in support of William and his strong will to kick leukemia from 1:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon (This is a rain or shine event). Click here to view the current flier for the event. Coach Jordan's Band, FFG, will be performing this Friday, September 29th at "It's A Grind" on Sunrise and Cirby. Performance is scheduled to begin at 8pm. Sugarbear board members have attended a couple of the band's performances to give it a preview and make sure it would be good to have our swim families attend. The band's music and lyrics are fine, but can be quite loud in live, electrical venues. This performance is recommended since this is an acoustic show and there is also no cover charge. Jordan is joined in the band by his fraternal twin brother, Jarret and their life-long friend, Mike Casewell. Please consider coming out this Friday to give the band a listen and visit with some of your swim buddies during the off-season. Bonus points for Sugarbears to yell out "Aye, Aye Captain" between the songs! Sugarbears ROCK!!

Also a reminder for the Kid's Health & Fitness Expo at the Roseville Sports Complex (near the RAC) from 1pm-4pm today, September 24th. Also FREE Admission!! Hope to see you there!!!

Any future lawyers out there?

Added to our list of Frequently Asked Questions today...

Does the Roseville Sugarbears Parent Club have bylaws?

The Roseville Sugarbear officers are recognized as a Standing Committee under the bylaws of the Roseville Aquatic Teams Booster Club (RATBC). Click here to access a scanned copy of the original Bylaws of the RATBC signed by former Sugarbear President, Diane Dawson. The Bylaws of the RATBC were created by former Roseville Sugarbear swim parent Marcus LoDuca. Some 2006 Season Wrap-ups

Surveys

If you didn't complete a survey at our awards night, you can complete the survey on-line.

Just click on the following link...
2006 Roseville Sugarbears Season Evaluation

If your family has yet to fill out a survey, please take just a couple of minutes and complete the survey.
Your feedback is highly valued and very important for our planning of next year.

Complete a survey before September 1st and your name will go in for a drawing for a FREE 2007 registration! Those that filled out and submitted at our awards night are already entered. Thank you. We have already received over 50 surveys which is already a higher percentage of families responding than last year, which is a very good and healthy sign by itself.

We forgot to draw a name at the awards ceremony for an additional immediate prize for filling out a survey. The winner is Melissa Lind. Melissa Lind wins a FREE Papa Murhpys Pizza and stays in the hat for the drawing for the FREE 2007 registration! Congratulations Melissa.

Unclaimed Trophies

We have some unclaimed trophies from our Awards night. But fewer than we have seen in the past, which is another really good sign. If you were unable to make our awards night, please contact Michael Taylor @ 782-6977. The trophies are at his house. Do you have any issue with your trophy? Incorrect spelling, wrong age group listed? Please let us know. All Awards is normally very good about assisting with any required corrections. Their phone number is 729-0505.

Slide Show and Champs Podcast

The 2006 Slide Show should be made available on our website soon. The board will be discussing if they should have DVD copies made of the slide show. Please respond if that interests you. Thanks again to David Thomas for doing such an AWESOME job! David also took many of the pictures along with Colleen Cole and Mark Hoppes. Great Job!!! Thank you David, Colleen and Mark.

A Podcast from Champs is also in the works and should be posted later this week.

Stay Tuned...

Unlike many other swim teams and websites, we will not go completely dormant during the offseason. The Sugarbear Board Members meet on a monthly basis throughout the year. Look for additional updates concerning new board positions/selections, fireworks lottery picks, 2007 swim suit selections and status updates on any league issues (ie., touchpads at Champs), to name a few.

It is also hoped that we can have some more podcasts published during the offseason.

Sugarbears are clearly on the rise!

Go SUGARBEARS!!!

Health Risks/Concerns at Champs

The following email exchange was between a Sugarbear parent and the City of Roseville. The Sugarbear Board thought the information was valuable and worth sharing.

---- Email to City of Rosevile Parks and Rec ----

The Weather Channel is predicting the temperature at Saturday's
Championship Swim Meet at the Roseville Aquatics Complex to reach 112
degrees. It will be much hotter for those having to be in direct sun
light and having to perform chores like barbequing. In addition, air
quality is expected to be poor and a "Spare the Air Advisory" might well
be in effect.
Prolonged exposure and physical activity under these conditions poses a
serious health risk to the athletes, volunteers, and spectators at this
event.
The City of Roseville and the participating swim clubs need to accept
the responsibility of informing everyone about the dangers of heat
exposure and poor air quality. It is important that the following is
provided to ensure general safety:

1) Trained first-aid or emergency medical personal on site.
2) Written information and periodic public announcements on the
prevention and symptoms of overheating and respriatory distress.
3) A means for people to cool off.

This event is intended to be a fun and competitive climax to the swim
season. Please see that every precaution is staken to ensure everyone's
safety from the heat during the competition.

Sincerely,
David Callaghan
Roseville Surgarbears parent

--- The City of Roseville Park and Rec Response ----

We do thank you for your concerns.

Here are some answers to your questions.

1) We will have plenty of trained lifeguards on staff ready to go if
anything should happen. Along with that we have contacted the fire
department, which is located around the corner from the pool, that we
will be having this meet.

2) Before the meet the Program Coordinator will discuss with the announcers that they will periodically need to be announcing, prevention and symptoms of
overheating and respiratory distress.

3) The outside showers located next to the restrooms will be available
for people to cool off. We should also have hoses on either side of the
deck to keep the deck cool. There is also the possibility that if it
gets hot enough we will close the warm-up pool and allow people to use
the pool to cool off.

Thanks again,

City of Roseville Parks and Rec

Special thanks to Lisa Callaghan, Christine Feller and the Morel family for doing night watches.
Our fearless leader, Carmen Morel, also worked all day yesterday along with the Langley's.
Also a special thanks to Colleen Cole and Cheryl Wall for pulling additional shifts in times of need.

The Langley family deserves special mention for this year's fireworks booth.
Jon and Mickey Langley, besides allowing the use of their trailer, put in many hours and effort into the booth.
Mickey is a superstar.
When you also consider she is still recovering from surgery to remove cancer and a broken arm still in a cast, she is simply amazing.

Thank you!!!

Crazy Hat Day Theme!

A reminder that our theme for this Saturday's meet with the Granite Bay Gators is Crazy Hat Day! So, be sure to make or bring your crazy hat for this weekend's meet.

For parents, we still have some unassigned lane timer shifts which need to be filled before this Saturday. Please contact Pete Hradecky if you are able to time. Or better yet, add your assignment directly onto our on-line volunteer database. This is our last home meet for 2006, so please assist in making this an enjoyable and memorable meet for everyone.

For added fun and incentive, the Sugarbears will be awarding a prize to both the AM and PM shift timers, for the lane which has the most occurences of exactly the same two stop watched timed results (down to the 100th of a second) for an event. The prizes will be coupons for a free large Papa Murphy's Pizza or Lasagne. Go Sugarbears!!!!

Introducing Sugarbear Lite for families with Dialup

As our Sugarbear website has grown over the years, it has come to our attention that the home page may be slow to come up and display for those families accessing the internet with a dialup connection.

So, introducing Sugarbear lite...
You can access a lighter, quicker home page by using either of the following URLs.

http://lite.sugarbears.org
or
http://www.sugarbears.org/lite

If you are using a dialup connection you may want to access and bookmark one of the above URLs.

Open to suggestions and feedback if there are certain graphics or content that you want to have included in the lite version.

Cheers,

StinkyCheeseMan

Sugarbear Swim Buddy and Personal Goals area

Roseville Sugarbear swimmers now have their own area on our website to share their swim buddy information and personal goal times with their fellow swimmers and coaches. Parents can initially access the area with this season's standard password and see the password which can be shared and used directly by the swimmers.

Great way for swimmers to note and track their progress and achievements against their own goals and the 2005 Meet of Champion (MoC) times for their particular age group's events. The MoC times are the 10th place finish times from last year's VFCAL Championships, which were the qualifying times for the swimmers to advance to the MoC. These are the same times which the coaches use to highlight the Sugarbear swimmers on our Board of Champions on the bulletin board at the pool deck. Go Sugarbears!!!!!!!
